On the 2024 T20 World Cup snub, Steve Smith said, “I understood that they wanted to have all the strong guys that smack it miles.”

On the 2024 T20 World Cup snub, Steve Smith said, "I understood that they wanted to have all the strong guys that smack it miles."

Australia’s 15-man roster for the June 2024 T20 World Cup in the USA and the West Indies did not include Steve Smith. Following back-to-back losses against Afghanistan and India, Mitchell Marsh’s Men in Yellow were eliminated in the Super Eight round.

Despite being one of the greatest batters in Australian history, Smith was not included in the team because the selectors went with players who are stronger at hitting with more force. Admitting that he understood the management’s choice to support the big players over him, the 35-year-old said.

“I have no idea what’s going on in the international T20 league. It’s acceptable that they wish to invite certain individuals, as they clearly have some. I could see why they wanted to load the pitch for the World Cup with so many powerful athletes. I recognised that. I don’t give a damn. Regarding his exclusion from the T20 World Cup roster, Smith told Fox Cricket, “I’ll just go about my business, keep trying to improve and get better.”

Steve Smith returned to T20Is at the conclusion of the previous year, having made a good showing in the Big Bash League (BBL), but he averaged a pitiful 19 in the format in 2022.

He was only able to score 86 runs at an average of 21.50 in four games, though. He was consequently left out of the World Cup squad, which didn’t assist his cause given his dismal returns.

With a strike rate of 125.46 and an average of 24.86 in 55 innings in 67 T20Is, the former captain of Australia has amassed 1,094 runs. Smith has indicated his desire to participate in the Indian Premier League once more. October 2021 marked his final game in the franchise league, which pays a lot of money.

Since then, the Sydney native has covered the Indian Premier League as an analyst, but he plans to put his name up for sale before the 2025 season.
