On Friday, September 22 at the Punjab Cricket Association IS Bindra Stadium in Mohali, the first of the three ODI between India and Australia will take place. After choosing to bat first, Australia was invited by Indian skipper KL Rahul. Australia was dismissed for 276 in the first innings thanks to a brilliant session by Mohammed Shami (5/51). The decision was supported by the bowlers.
In response, India got off to a strong start in their innings thanks to openers Shubman Gill and Ruturaj Gaikwad. Gill in particular looked great as he started his innings with some beautiful strokes. In the fourth over of the innings, the 24-year-old played a beautiful pull shot that stunned everyone.
The first batter hit a short delivery over deep square leg for a six on the second ball of Marcus Stoinis’s first over. Harsha Bhogle, a commentator, was astounded at Gill’s amazing pull shot as was I. Two balls later, he drove Stoinis through covers for a boundary by using his feet, showcasing his great variety of strokes.

The openers completed their individual half century as their partnership increased to 142 off 130 balls. With the aid of 10 fours, Ruturaj Gaikwad played a brilliant innings of (71 off 77).
In 2023, Gill has scored the most runs in ODIs.
Notably, Gill has scored 1052 runs in 18 innings (before to the first ODI) at an average of 70.03 and a strike rate of 104.05 with 450 fifty-plus to his credit, making him the player with the most runs scored in ODIs in 2023. With 302 runs to his credit, the 24-year-old recently concluded as the Asia Cup 2023’s leading run scorer.
Mohammed Shami, meanwhile, recorded his second five-wicket haul in ODIs, matching his best 50-over numbers. Along with Shami, other wickets included Jasprit Bumrah (1/43), Ravichandran Ashwin (1/47), and Ravindra Jadeja (1/51).
