Northern Superchargers Get New Name – Sunrisers Leeds

Before the 2026 season of The Hundred, the Northern Superchargers team has changed its name to Sunrisers Leeds.

Sun Group, a media conglomerate that also owns Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) in the Indian Premier League (IPL) and Sunrisers Eastern Cape, a two-time SA20-winning team in South Africa, has purchased the Leeds-based team.

A composite identity that unites the Leeds-based team with the Sun Group’s worldwide Sunrisers brand across cricket leagues is reflected in the rebranding, according to ESPNcricinfo. In accordance with SEBI guidelines, the business communicated this information to the National Stock Exchange (NSE) and the Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE).

The Sun Group finally decided on Sunrisers Leeds after considering two other names for the franchise a few months prior: Northern Super Sunrisers and Sunrisers Leeds. Other teams in The Hundred that are anticipated to alter their names include the Manchester Originals and the Oval Invincibles, in addition to the Northern Superchargers.

Given that the RP-Sanjiv Goenka Group owns a sizable portion of the Manchester Originals, the team will probably change its name to Manchester Super Giants to better reflect the Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) of the IPL.

Similar to this, after Reliance Industries Limited purchased a portion of the Oval Invincibles franchise in 2024, the South London-based team is anticipated to change its name to MI London. The Oval Invincibles have won five titles in both the men’s and women’s divisions, making them the most successful team in The Hundred’s five-year history.

Reliance Industries already owns a number of T20 cricket teams, such as the MI Cape Town in SA20, the MI Emirates in ILT20, the MI New York in MLC, and the Mumbai Indians and Mumbai Indians Women in the IPL and WPL.

All eight franchises, the Professional Cricketers’ Association, the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB), and The Hundred’s Playing Working Group have all been consulted in the decision to switch to an auction-based player recruitment method. Teams will now have 16–18 players, including up to four foreign players, as part of a reform in squad makeup.
