Many former cricket players believe that RR erred when they sent Shimron Hetmyer to bat in the Super Over before Nitish Rana. In Match No. 32 of the IPL 2025, the Delhi Capitals (DC) defeated the Rajasthan Royals (RR) in an exciting Super Over match. Though it ultimately did not work out, Rana has defended the management, claiming that it was ultimately the “right” choice.
Since Hetmyer has finished last in the event, RR was anticipating some significant hits from the player. But that didn’t work out as expected. Later in the Super Over, he was run out after he was only able to strike a boundary. With only 12 runs scored, RR was unable to hold off DC’s KL Rahul and Tristan Stubbs.
The Delhi native had earlier in the gane blasted 51 runs off 28 balls, including two sixes and six boundaries. Despite his 182.14% strike rate, he was not selected to bat in the Super Over. He continued by explaining that the RR management, along with the captain and two senior players, made the choice.
“The call is answered by management, not a single individual. Along with two other senior players and coaches, the captain is present. You wouldn’t be asking this question if Shimron Hetmyer had hit two sixes. I’ll respond with the same response. I have no other response. Whatever choice we made was the right one. Everyone knows that Shimron Hetmyer is our finisher.
At the news conference following the game, Nitish Rana stated, “He has previously delivered.”
The Super Over resulted after RR’s failure to score nine runs in the final over against Mitchell Starc, despite pursuing a target of 189 runs. Axar Patel demonstrated excellent captaincy by utilising Starc in the Super Over after reserving his over for the final over. With five victories in six games, DC has been the first team to reach 10 points in the competition, putting them back at the top.
