At the age of 29, Nicholas Pooran shocked the cricket community by declaring his retirement from international play. In the early hours of Tuesday, June 10, the destructive wicketkeeper-batter posted on social media to announce his choice.
Nicholas Pooran played 106 ODIs and 61 T20Is before ending his international career. In the two versions, he amassed 2275 and 1983 runs, respectively. In the shortest format, the Trinidadian is the West Indies’ top run scorer.
Nicholas Pooran, who was most recently saw playing for the Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025, stated that he had to make a tough choice and that being captain of the West Indies was an honour for him.
“To the cricket community: I’ve made the decision to announce my retirement from international cricket after giving it careful consideration. This beloved game has brought us joy, a sense of purpose, priceless memories, and the opportunity to represent the West Indies’ people, among many other benefits. It’s difficult for me to express how much it means to me to wear that maroon, stand for the anthem and give it my all every time I took the pitch. “I will always cherish the honour of leading the team as captain,” Nicholas Pooran stated in his Instagram message.
Nicholas Pooran thanked his family members, past teammates, and supporters for supporting him during his highs and lows.
“Thank you for your unfailing affection, fans. With unrivalled fervour, you celebrated the good times and helped me through the bad. I want to express my gratitude to my teammates, friends, and family for joining me on this trip. I got through it all because of your faith and encouragement. Despite the end of this international phase of my career, I will always have a deep affection for West Indies cricket. “I wish the team and the area all the best for the future,” he said in closing.
