Women's T20 World Cup 2024: New Zealand receive massive prize money after winning maiden title

The women’s squad of New Zealand secured a historic prize fund and won their first-ever T20 World Cup victory. The squad captained by Sophie Devine won the summit match by 32 runs over South Africa. The team was awarded USD 2.3 million, which is roughly NZD 256,000 for each member of the team. This was the biggest payout in the team’s history.

The team celebrated two years ago when they were paid the same as their male counterparts for ODIs (NZD 4,000) and T20Is (NZD 2,500). For the White Ferns, the World Cup success has now created a number of new revenue streams.

“Very unbelievable to be honest,” Rosemary Mair said of the World Cup victory.

New Zealand’s comeback started with a vital warm-up victory over South Africa after they had suffered ten straight T20 losses prior to the competition. With their sole defeat occurring against Australia in the group stage, they were able to maintain this momentum and defeat India, Sri Lanka, and Pakistan.

The victorious team put on a strong all-around display in the final, with Brooke Halliday (38), Amelia Kerr (43), and Suzie Bates (32), who helped the team reach 158/5. The bowling team then held South Africa to 126/9 under the leadership of Kerr (3/24) and Rosemary Mair (3/25).

I think it’s really unbelievable. It’s amazing that the group has recovered as well as they did, as reported by the Telegraph, considering that all the odds were against us going into the competition.

Chris Bishop, New Zealand’s sports minister, commended the team for winning the championship for the first time ever and for their outstanding performance in the competition.
