Mohammad Nawaz is currently the world’s top spinner, according to Pakistan head coach Mike Hesson, ahead of the highly anticipated match. After being benched for the T20 World Cup the previous year, the left-arm spinner has been incredibly reliable, taking 20 wickets in 11 games. In the just finished tri-series final in Sharjah, he scored five runs, including a hat-trick, against Afghanistan.
Ahead of the highly anticipated match between India and Pakistan in the 2025 Asia Cup, the mind games have already begun. On Sunday, September 14, the two bitter rivals will square off at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium.
Under Hesson, Nawaz has been in incredible form ever since rejoining the T20I squad in July.
“I suppose that having five spinners is what makes our team so great. When asked if the battle of the spinners will decide Sunday’s match, Hesson responded to the media, “We have Mohamed Nawaz, who is currently the best spin bowler in the world, and he’s been ranked that way over the last six months since he’s come back on the side.”
“Of course, we also have Sufiyan and Abrar. Saim Ayub is now ranked among the world’s top ten all-round players. Additionally, Salman Ali Agha, Pakistan’s Test spinner, has barely bowled. So, if we think the conditions are right, we have a lot of spin bowling choices,” Hesson continued.
India has a powerful combination of Varun Chakaravarthy, Kuldeep Yadav, and Axar Patel in their ranks, while Pakistan has a formidable spin-bowling team.
We are fully conscious of how big the task at hand is: As he gets ready to experience the legendary India-Pakistan rivalry up close, Hesson expressed his excitement. Although he recognised the significance of the event, he stated that his squad should not look too far ahead of themselves and instead focus on the present.
“Look, I have undoubtedly watched a lot of games from a distance while commentating or with other teams. Being in the middle of such a dynamic occasion will be thrilling. In my opinion, the goal is to keep everyone focused on the task at hand, regardless of whether you’re playing a global event final or a game of that size. This weekend won’t be any different,” Hesson stated.
We are aware that India is extremely confident, and with good reason, given their performance thus far. Our goal as a team is to get better every single day. We’re not getting ahead of ourselves too much. We understand the magnitude of the challenge that lies ahead. “I am definitely excited about it,” he continued.
