Heather Knight has been replaced as captain of the England women’s cricket team by Nat Sciver-Brunt. After England’s historic 16-0 loss to Australia in the multi-format Women’s Ashes in late 2024 and early 2025, Knight, who had been the team’s captain for nine years, was asked to resign.
Because of her experience and outstanding performance in the WPL and for England at the highest level, Nat Sciver-Brunt, Knight’s deputy, was chosen without hesitation. Since making his England debut in 2013, Brunt has played in 12 Test matches, 115 WODIs, and 132 WT20Is. With nine victories and three defeats in 12 games (11 T20Is and one ODI), she has captained England.
After her appointment, she thanked everyone and called it a proud moment. Recalling her early days as an England player, Nat Sciver-Brunt said that winning games for her team was always her top priority. She also mentioned how excited she was to collaborate with Charlotte Edwards, who she had worked with for three seasons on Mumbai Indians.
I’m eager to see where this collaboration takes us: Nat Sciver-Brunt
Charlotte, who I’ve always admired, invited me to captain the England women’s team, and I’m incredibly honoured to accept the position. I’ve wanted to do all in my power to support the team ever since I made my England debut in 2013. Sciver-Brunt declared, “I will do everything in my power to guide this team to success while enabling them to be the best versions of themselves.”
In addition to winning the ICC Women’s Cricketer of the Year award in 2022 and 2023, Nat Sciver-Brunt was named PCA Player of the Year in 2017 and 2022. She was named to the ICC Women’s ODI and T20 Teams of the Year in 2023 after having an outstanding run in white-ball cricket that year. Additionally, Nat Sciver-Brunt became the first player to reach 500 runs in a Women’s Premier League game.
“We have a cohesive group with a diverse range of talents. I think this is a team that can achieve great success as a unit. Having enjoyed working with Charlotte for the past three years at the Mumbai Indians, it’s incredibly wonderful to be working with her now. I’m eager to see where this collaboration takes us, and her enthusiasm for the England Women’s team and her love of cricket are encouraging,” Sciver-Brunt continued.
“We are delighted to have appointed Nat as England Women’s captain and I know she’s excited about the honour of leading the team during an unprecedented chapter in international women’s cricket,” stated Clare Connor, Managing Director of England Women’s Cricket.
“Nat is a terrific cricket player, as everyone knows, but her attributes go much beyond her on-field prowess. She is introspective, strong, and motivated to achieve her goals and those of others around her. In the group, Nat is well respected, and I have no doubt that she and Charlotte will have a successful and fascinating collaboration,” Connor continued.
