Former national captain Najmul Hossain was recently offered the position but refused to accept it, proving that the Bangladesh Cricket Board was unable in persuading him to change his stance.
On Saturday, October 25, a BCB source told Cricbuzz that the situation had been confirmed. The source also stated that Najmul Hossain, who had previously resigned as Test captain after the board physically took away his ODI captaincy, had already told the board of his decision.
In a lengthy conversation with Najmul Hossain after the third ODI between Bangladesh and the West Indies at the Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium on October 23, BCB cricket operation chief Nazmul Abedin urged the southpaw to change his mind.
“He (Najmul Hossain) is not interested to lead at the moment and informed us about his decision,” a BCB official stated when asked to maintain anonymity.
Najmul Hossain departure following the Test series against Sri Lanka left the position of Test captain open.
Litton Kumar Das, the current T20I captain, is reportedly being considered by Bangladesh as a potential replacement for the head of the Test team. With a two-match Test series against Ireland set to begin in Sylhet on November 11, it was reported that the BCB is awaiting Litton’s consent.
Following criticism of his ODI captaincy, current captain Mehidy Hasan, who had previously shown interest in leading the Test team, is unlikely to be given the opportunity.
After four consecutive series losses, Mehidy won the three-match ODI series against the West Indies at home, but he fell short of expectations, and many inside the board are worried about his tenure being extended after the one-year period that started on June 12 is over. Only three of Bangladesh’s 13 games in the format have been victories under Mehidy.
Although BCB president Aminul Islam recently stated that there is no hard-and-fast rule regarding captaincy, it currently appears highly improbable that they will have three captains in three forms when they give over the ODI captaincy to Mehidy.
“Our policy for Test cricket is very clear. The board, selectors, and senior coaching staff will have multiple conversations to determine who is best suited. At the third ODI match between Bangladesh and the West Indies at the Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium on October 23, Bulbul informed media that the selected player must also consent to play the part.
Additionally, the BCB boss alluded to flexibility with reference to the multi-captain strategy. “There is no strict requirement that there be three captains. Individuals may choose to perform all three, two, or just one of the three. “It depends on the team’s best interests and the conversations,” Bulbul remarked.
If BCB wants an alternative to Taijul Islam and Mominul Haque to head the Test team, they can continue to maintain their policy of having three leaders in three formats. Taijul had already stated publicly that he wanted to captain the Test team, and Mominul Haque, who had previously resigned as captain, informed Cricbuzz that he would be willing to take the position again if the board offered.
