Najmul Hossain Shanto has been replaced as Bangladesh’s new ODI captain for a 12-month term by Mehidy Hasan Miraz. Only a few weeks before the Bangladesh-Sri Lanka ODI series begins, the abrupt decision was made. According to sources, Shanto has expressed a desire to resign from his position as Test captain in order to prevent power segregation.
Speaking of the choice, Miraz asserted that she had no idea what was discussed. Nonetheless, he believed that his captaincy would have been accepted by all members of the board meeting. Mehidy Hasan Miraz asserted that he had learnt about the leadership shift a day ago.
Najmul Hossain tenure as captain, in Mehidy’s opinion, lasted just till the 2025 Champions Trophy.
“How (the leadership) was chosen is unknown to me. Usually, a board meeting is where it is done. No one can make their own decisions. I believe that most of us are psychologically ready for any circumstance that we may encounter. According to Cricbuzz, Mehidy told reporters, “He was the ODI captain for a term, which had ended (in the Champions Trophy).”
“It’s likely that they discussed the Test team. I don’t know if they mentioned the ODI squad. I received a call yesterday from Fahim sir (Nazmul Abedin, the chairman of the BCB cricket operation), who informed me that they don’t have much time and that I would be given the task. Their decision must be made immediately. They are making plans appropriately,” he added.
Our goal is to advance Bangladesh: Miraz
The renowned all-rounder went on to say that although Najmul Hossain Shanto had performed well in ODIs, the board had decided to replace him as captain. However, he believed that the dressing room would not be significantly impacted by the shift in leadership. Mehidy Hasan Miraz promised stability in the Bangladeshi team and reaffirmed that he will continue to have Shanto’s support.
“The board decided to switch the captaincy, even though Najmul had been playing brilliantly in ODIs. It’s possible that at this time, our team’s performance fell short of expectations. The change in captaincy won’t affect the dressing room, in my opinion. All of us are competing for the nation. Shanto and I won’t be bothered by these things. During his command, I was of great assistance to him. He’ll follow suit. He’ll assist me. We wish to improve Bangladesh,” he continued.
The new captain of Bangladesh reminisced about his time playing with Shanto at the Under-15 level. Because of their elders’ contributions, he felt compelled to lead the squad out of the current predicament. To recuperate from the difficult moment they are going through, Miraz said in closing.
Since our Under-15 days, Shanto and I have been playing together. Regardless of the captain, we discussed moving Bangladesh ahead. We must play together. We want to advance the team after our older players got us to this point. We are accountable for it. We’re going through a difficult moment, but I’m hoping we can move past it soon,” Miraz said.
