Mustafizur Exit: IPL Governing Council Left Out?

There has been a great deal of controversy surrounding the decision to remove Bangladeshi pacer Mustafizur Rahman from the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026. According to a number of reports, the IPL Governing Council and senior Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) officials were not consulted before the decision was made.

But only a few weeks later, the BCCI told the team to cut the left-arm bowler from the team. The decision was publicly announced by BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia, who said that the board had ordered KKR to cut the Bangladeshi international from their roster and that the action was taken in view of recent events.

At the IPL 2026 mini-auction, Mustafizur was purchased by the Kolkata Knight Riders for INR 9.20 crore.

The decision was made in the midst of growing political tensions between Bangladesh and India as a result of reports of attacks on Hindu minorities in the neighbouring nation. The Indian Express said that the BCCI’s top level made the decision to release Mustafizur without consulting the IPL Governing Council or a number of board members. Even those directly involved in IPL operations were not aware of the move until it was publicised by the media, according to a top BCCI official.

“The media is how we personally learnt about this. No conversation took place. We didn’t make any suggestions,” the BCCI official stated.

The government of Bangladesh has ordered an indefinite ban on IPL match broadcasting.

The interim government of Bangladesh banned the broadcasting of IPL matches within the nation for an undetermined period of time in protest of Mustafizur’s dismissal. The decision has upset and hurt the people of Bangladesh, according to the country’s information and broadcasting ministry.

Citing safety concerns, the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) has declined to send their squad to India for the 2026 ICC Men’s T20 World Cup. Bangladesh was supposed to play one group match at Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai and three at Eden Gardens in Kolkata. Since Sri Lanka is co-hosting the event, the BCB has formally asked the ICC to move its matches there.
