The Mumbai Indians squad that won the first Women’s Premier League (WPL) in 2023 included wicketkeeper-battler Yastika Bhatia. She recently talked exclusively to JioCinema about her early years, juggling her studies and cricket, her India debut, and the next WPL season. Take a peek:
When she was younger,
Sports have always been a hobby of mine. But because school was such a big part of my upbringing, I never imagined that cricket would be my career. One of my neighbors once played in the Ranji Trophy. He informed my dad that a girls’ team was rehearsing at a nearby field. I went there with my sister. I had to wait two years for admission because I was too tiny at the time, and my sister was admitted instead. I would dream of dropping down to the ground and playing with my sister while I waited for my opportunity.
On juggling education with cricket
That was really challenging. As long as I finished my syllabus within six months, I could play cricket. Academics were not to be bargained with.
Regarding early role models
At first, I didn’t adhere to anyone. My goal was to have fun while hitting. Subsequently, I also began to concentrate on maintaining wickets. One day, I watched Adam Gilchrist. He was the wicketkeeper-batsman for Australia. Subsequently, Smriti Di quickly emerged as my favourite after her debut.
Regarding her feelings following her selection for India in 2021
Everybody was content. Both my mom and father were in tears. They conceded that my efforts had been worthwhile. Although I was thrilled, my attention was on the fact that I needed to assist India in winning the series in order to help the team win the World Cup. I became aware that I had more responsibilities now. Smriti di had aided in my calm down before my debut, hinting that I might make my appearance. I should play for Baroda the same way I used to, she said. The series versus Australia started off quite nicely.
Yastika Bhatia did not like to try badminton, karate, or swimming.
However, self-doubt had started to sneak in until the day I made my debut. However, I was also trying to get better at what I was doing. I was discussing with Kiran Sir how I could improve my performance as well.
Regarding her last season in the WPL
It left a lasting impression. Nobody could predict the course of events. However, we were made to feel like family when we were accepted into the squad. We would have lengthy conversations on how to make our game better. The next WPL edition is something I am eagerly anticipating. I am eager to don the Mumbai Indians jersey and return to the field. Being a part of MI is an entirely different feeling.
