Mumbai Cricket Association intends to build a new, one lakh+ seat cricket stadium in Thane

According to a recent article published in The Times of India, the Maharashtra State Road Development Corporation (MSRDC) has put out an open tender for a 50-acre plot of land in Thane district’s Amane village, and the Mumbai Cricket Association (MCA) has already submitted an application for the site. After getting state government permission, a detailed strategy will be outlined.

The Indian squad that won the T20 World Cup in 2024 gathered in the Maharashtra Vidhan Sabha in Mumbai just one day after their spectacular victory parade that began at Nariman Point and ended with an exciting event at the Wankhede Stadium in the city of dreams. When Captain Rohit Sharma, Suryakumar Yadav, Shivam Dube, and Yashasvi Jaiswal appeared in the Assembly, Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, Chief Minister Eknath Shinde, and other officials welcomed them.

After the state government honoured all of the cricket players from Maharashtra, Fadnavis asked his senior Shinde to consider building a top-notch cricket stadium in the state that would hold more than a lakh spectators, making it the largest stadium in the nation.

The Mumbai Cricket Association plans to construct a big cricket stadium with a seating capacity of one lakh on about fifty acres of open space in Amane.

which is located 68 kilometres from Wankhede Stadium and 26 kilometres from Thane. In order to purchase the land parcel, the Maharashtra State Road Development Corporation (MSRDC) put out an open tender, which the MCA filled. According to the article, the association is awaiting approval from the Maharashtra government.

Amol Kale‘s ideal project was the new stadium, according to a source.

Fadnavis was very close to the late MCA President Amol Kale, and he is said to have had this new cricket arena built as his dream project. Notably, Kale died in June in New York from cardiac arrest, not long after going to the India vs. Pakistan match.

“Amol Kale, the president of MCA, dreamed of building this stadium (he passed away on June 10 in New York). The insider added in the report, “It will have all the contemporary conveniences, including two grounds where elite matches can be played.

The two MCA grounds that have currently held international matches are Navi Mumbai’s Dr. D.Y. Patil Sports Academy and Mumbai’s Wankhede Stadium. While international matches have also been held at the BKC Ground and Deccan Gymkhana Ground, both venues lack modern amenities. The old Brabourne Stadium is located next to Wankhede, however it is not part of the city’s association’s grounds because it is owned and run by the Cricket Club of India (CCI).
