Four nations who could go to the semifinals of the forthcoming T20 World Cup, which India and Sri Lanka will co-host, were predicted by former England spinner Monty Panesar. The dates of the 20-team competition are set for February 7–March 9.
In addition to South Africa and India, the finalists from the previous edition, Panesar selected Ashes rivals Australia and England to advance to the final four. He believes that New Zealand is not strong enough to get to the knockout stages of the 2024 T20 World Cup, having been eliminated in the first round itself.
“South Africa, Australia, India, and England, I believe.” England’s strength is their ability to defeat elite teams. New Zealand isn’t very powerful at the moment, in my opinion. South Africa is powerful. India is going to be powerful. Australia is powerful as well.
“England as well,” Monty Panesar stated in a KADAK interview.
Additionally, Monty Panesar selected Indian captain Suryakumar Yadav, who has been struggling, to earn Player of the Series. With just 218 runs at a pitiful average of 13.62 in 19 T20I innings, the 35-year-old has struggled with the bat this year.
Axar Patel will take over as T20 captain if India loses the T20 World Cup: Monty Panesar
According to Monty Panesar, Suryakumar might be replaced as skipper in the shortest format by Axar Patel if India loses the T20 World Cup. According to the cricket player-turned-expert, this choice may have been influenced by India’s head coach Gautam Gambhir’s preference for all-round players.
“I believe that because Gautam Gambhir prefers all-round players. He favours individuals who can make a small contribution with both bowling and batting in both Test and Twenty20 cricket. With these athletes, he feels more at ease. Therefore, I believe that Axar Patel might take over as T20 captain if India does not win the T20 World Cup,” Monty Panesar said.
After defeating South Africa by seven runs in Barbados in June 2024, India is the reigning T20 World Cup champion.
