Mohsin Naqvi, the chairman of the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) and the Asian Cricket Council (ACC), who is also Pakistan’s interior minister, did not receive the trophy from the Indian players. India consequently celebrated their championship victory without the trophy and have since left for home.
On Sunday, September 28, India won the Asia Cup 2025 final over Pakistan. However, the fact that the squad did not get the trophy during the presentation ceremony tainted the victory celebrations.
Officials from the Emirates Cricket Board (ECB) and the organisers objected, but Mohsin Naqvi insisted on giving the trophy himself.
Mohsin Naqvi has now consented to transfer the trophy, according to Cricbuzz, but only if a formal event is planned. The standoff has been prolonged by his continued insistence that he be the only one to present the Indian team with the trophy and medals. Such a ceremony is unlikely to be held given the current political tensions between India and Pakistan as well as the events leading up to the final.
A few of Indian players are expected to proceed to their next assignments in the interim. Shubman Gill and Jasprit Bumrah are among those training for the Test series against the West Indies, which starts in Ahmedabad on October 2. Abhishek Sharma and Tilak Varma have been included in the teams for the second and third unofficial ODIs against Australia A.
Discussions at the ACC meeting, which is set for September 30 at 4:00 PM IST, are anticipated to centre on the trophy dispute. At the ICC’s Annual General Meeting on November 24, the BCCI also intends to file a protest.
The Asia Cup trophy is still in the same hotel in Dubai where Mohsin Naqvi is currently staying. at order to forward it to India, he has been ordered to present it to the ACC office at Dubai Sports City. The PCB Chairman’s compliance and attendance at the meeting are yet unknown, though.
