Mohit Sharma announces retirement from cricket

After a 12-year career, Indian fast bowler Mohit Sharma has declared his retirement from all forms of cricket. The Mohit Sharma pacer thanked teammates, coaches, and supporters in an Instagram post on December 3.

Between 2013 and 2015, Mohit Sharma played for India in 26 One-Day Internationals (ODIs) and eight Twenty20 Internationals (T20Is), taking 35 ODI and six T20I wickets. Additionally, he played for India in the 2015 ODI World Cup, where he took 13 wickets. He played in 120 IPL games for the Delhi Capitals, Gujarat Titans, Chennai Super Kings, and Punjab Kings, taking 134 wickets and becoming one of the most reliable spinners in the closing overs.

Mohit Sharma thanked Anirudh Chaudhry for being his mentor during his career and the Haryana Cricket Association in his retirement letter. He also expressed gratitude to his wife for her unwavering patience and support over the highs and lows of professional athletics.

In the 2014 IPL, Mohit Sharma earned the Purple Cap.

Under the guidance of speed coach Ian Pont, Mohit’s breakthrough came during the 2012–13 domestic season, when he claimed 37 wickets. He signed a deal with the Chennai Super Kings in 2013 as a result of his achievements, and he flourished under MS Dhoni there. He even took 23 wickets in 2014 to win the Purple Cap.

In that same year, he made his debut for India and soon established himself as a reliable supporting seamer in ODIs and T20Is. Mohit’s variations in the IPL, particularly his back-of-the-hand slower balls, cutters, and subtle pace adjustments, garnered him attention. He claimed 57 wickets in the last overs alone throughout his IPL career.

Mohit made a spectacular return with the Gujarat Titans in 2023 after missing the IPL in 2021 and 2022. The veteran came within one wicket of winning the Purple Cap with 27 wickets. After that, he took 13 wickets in the 2024 season before joining the Delhi Capitals for the 2025 Indian Premier League. Prior to his release in front of the 2026 auction, he made his final appearance for DC earlier this year.
