During the first ODI between India and England at the Vidarbha Cricket Association Stadium in Nagpur, veteran pacer Mohammed Shami looked stunning as he dominated Brydon Carse. Playing his first 50-over international encounter since India’s World Cup final against Australia on November 19, 2023, the Indian pacer was looking for his first wicket of the game when he hit his 41st delivery, classically destroying Carse’s stumps.
Yashasvi Jaiswal and Harshit Rana made their debuts in the opening ODI of the three-match series. Despite their strong start, England struggled to achieve a manageable score because they kept losing wickets. The visitors started well after choosing to bat first thanks to fast runs from Phil Salt (43 off 26) and Ben Duckett (32 off 29). Jos Buttler’s half-century (52 off 67) and Jacob Bethell’s knock (51 off 64), however, helped steady the innings following a middle-order collapse.
Carse attempted to quicken the pace of scoring but was thwarted by Mohammed Shami genius, as the Three Lions were already behind at 206 for 6 in the 40th over.
The speedster hit the off-stump with a good-length delivery. The delivery turned out to be a classic “you-miss-I-hit” from Shami, and Carse tried to slog across the line but missed the ball entirely. It then crashed into the middle stump. With over 10 overs remaining in the innings, his breakthrough exposed the tailenders as England struggled at 206 for 7.
Mohammed Shami, Axar Patel, Hardik Pandya, and Kuldeep Yadav each claimed one wicket as India bowled England for 248 runs, with Ravindra Jadeja and Harshit Rana taking three each.

England’s struggles persisted after Carse was fired. India maintained control after Ravindra Jadeja trapped Bethell LBW in the 43rd over. Jofra Archer attempted to give it the last push, however. England’s batting total at the time of writing was 242/9 after 47 overs.
