Mohammad Kaif, a former India cricketer who was a fiery performer on the field during his playing days, has voiced his concerns regarding the treatment of India players’ injuries at the National Cricket Academy in Bengaluru.
Mohammad Kaif believes that there is a lack of ‘transparency’ when it comes to the fitness levels of certain players, as was the case with Jasprit Bumrah and Mohammed Shami in the past. Kaif believes the absence of clarity is unfair to the sport’s ardent fans.
Since Australia’s visit to India for a bilateral T20I series, India’s pace spearhead Bumrah has been absent. He participated in the T20I series but has been absent since then. During the T20 World Cup in Australia, India was forced to rely on an inexperienced player like Arshdeep Singh in crucial moments due to his absence.
“I have observed systemic flaws. A number of players have been selected for the team, only to withdraw prior to the match on the grounds that they were not completely fit. This just occurred with Bumrah, and Mohammed Shami has done it a few times,” Kaif told Sportskeeda.
Therefore, the NCA trainers, physiotherapists, VVS Laxman, and his team must handle these situations. Because it is unfair to the cricket fans who expect Bumrah to perform the following day. I believe this is a very significant matter, and the administration should not take it lightly,” he stated.
Mohammad Kaif has urged the authorities responsible for player health to be more transparent.
When a player sustains an injury, he mentioned that the fans should be informed of the recovery procedure, the duration of time required for the same, and more.
“There should be transparency and thorough testing of players before they are declared fit. There should be no gray area; an athlete is either fit or more than 10 to 20 days are required. As a fan of Bumrah, I am curious about his injuries, recovery period, etc. Therefore, they should resolve this transparency issue and present the precise matter.”
