The squad also announced that Heinrich Klaasen, a former South African cricket player, has resigned as captain and would spend the rest of the season concentrating only on his batting duties. Sikandar Raza, an all-rounder for Zimbabwe, has been named the team’s new captain. The Seatlle Orcas highlighted that these choices were a part of their attempt to reorient the team for the remainder of the competition.
Halfway through the current Major League Cricket (MLC) season, the Seattle Orcas have made significant changes to its leadership. After the team suffered five straight losses, head coach Matthew Mott decided to leave. The team explained that different coaching and management approaches led to the decision.
“The Seattle Orcas are taking this time to ponder and rejuvenate. The squad has had to make some harsh decisions as a result of this challenging run. We wish Matthew the best of luck in his future pursuits and appreciate his dedication and professionalism during his tenure with us’, Orcas CEO Hemant Dua said in a statement cited by ESPNcricinfo.
Although Mott had assumed leadership of the Seattle Orcas prior to the current season, the head coach’s successor has not yet been announced. Ian Bell and Munaf Patel are in charge of the bowling and batting departments, respectively, while Rishi Bhardwaj remains the assistant coach.
The club has had trouble staying consistent on the pitch. They have scored 145 for 9, 200 for 5, and 177 for 6 when batting first, but these totals were insufficient to guarantee victories. They were bowled out for just 60 and 144 in the two games in which they batted second, but their chasing efforts have been far more worrisome.
Heinrich Klaasen has struggled lately, scoring just 55 runs with a strike rate of 144.73 in five innings.
With a strike rate of 85.36 and only 35 runs in three innings, Raza has not performed much better at bat. Nonetheless, the administration unanimously decided to name him captain.
“We honour Heinrich’s choice to willingly resign as captain in order to concentrate on his batting. This demonstrates his moral fibre and team-oriented approach. After Heinrich Klaasen informed us of his choice, we unanimously decided on Sikandar. “We think these adjustments pave the way for a successful second half of the season,” Dua stated.
Following a drop in performance since their inaugural season, the team is currently having difficulties. In the 2024 edition, the team fell to the bottom of the standings after winning the table and making it to the final of the first MLC in 2023, where they lost to MI New York in the second round. Heinrich Klaasen assumed leadership of the team in 2024 after Wayne Parnell captained them during the 2023 campaign.
The GMR Group and JSW Sports, who also jointly control the Delhi Capitals in the Indian Premier League (IPL) and the Women’s Premier League (WPL), are co-owners of the team. Their endeavours also include the UAE’s ILT20 (Dubai Capitals) and the SA20 league (Pretoria Capitals).
These franchises share a backroom arrangement with a number of support personnel, such as bowling coach Munaf and Venugopal Rao (General Manager – Cricket Operations).
