Mitchell Owen, a young and promising Australian batsman and sometimes seamer, has been named by the team as the substitute for the 36-year-old swashbuckling player after much debate among fans and analysts. The 23-year-old Hobart native is now playing in the PSL for the Peshawar Zalmi and will join the IPL after his time in the neighbouring country is over. He will replace the late Maxwell.
Glenn Maxwell, an all-rounder for the Punjab Kings (PBKS), was just declared out of the IPL 2025 because of a finger fracture he sustained throughout the season. The Melbourne-born player’s journey ended tragically since he did not receive a favourable evaluation in the tournament and was unable to meet expectations when he rejoined Punjab.
With six wins out of ten games thus far in the IPL, the team captained by Shreyas Iyer has enjoyed a respectable run. A victory over LSG on Sunday will move the squad up to the second slot on the IPL 2025 Points Table, where they are currently in fourth place. When Owen gets to India, it will be intriguing to see if he can fit in with the PBKS team and take over for the Big Show.
Mitchell Owen‘s career
Even though the 23-year-old is still relatively young in his career, he has already accomplished a lot, particularly in T20 cricket. Owen began his career as a middle order batsman but gradually developed into a big hit T20 opener for the Hobart Hurricanes. He has had a respectable time in the PSL, maintaining a high strike rate but not having yet had a standout middle-order innings.
He was most well-known in the 2024–25 Big Bash League (BBL), where he scored 452 runs at an average of 45.20 and had an incredible strike rate of 203.60, making him the tournament’s top run scorer. One of his two tournament hundreds came in the BBL final against the Sydney Thunder, where he was instrumental in the Hobart Hurricanes’ first-ever BBL championship.
Regarding Mitchell Owen overall T20 record, he has participated in 34 games, amassed 646 runs at a 25.84 average, and struck 184.57 runs overall. In the IPL 2025, he hopes to demonstrate his abilities to win games for PBKS and assist the team in capturing their first championship.
