The incident involving Afghanistan’s Gulbadin Naib, who reportedly attempted to waste time against Bangladesh by pretending to be injured, has been discussed by Australia’s T20I captain Mitchell Marsh. With rain falling outside, head coach Jonathan Trott gave the order to slow down the game from the dugout, and Naib fell to the ground, clutching his hamstring.
Bangladesh was down by two runs on the DLS par score at the moment when Naib pulled his hamstring at first slip. The game was interrupted and the rain had gotten significantly harder by the time Naib got his medicine. It is noteworthy that Afghanistan would have been declared the winners by DLS had the game been called off after then. Even so, the game continued a few minutes later as the rain let up, and Afghanistan triumphed by eight runs to advance to the semi-finals.
Mitchell Marsh, the captain of Australia, said that he laughed so hard at Naib’s injury that he started crying. Especially, Australia’s hopes of qualifying were riding on this match, and the whole team was staring at the TV, waiting to see what would happen.
“I was laughing so hard I was crying, and in the end it didn’t matter for the game. I mean, that was funny, but we can joke about it now. Marsh told cricket.com.au, “It was excellent. As a group, we watched it. It was evidently a really fantastic game, wasn’t it? many curves and turns. That was the only option available to us if you wanted to continue competing in this event. However, there’s also the fact that we were solely responsible for it because it was entirely outside our control.”

Marsh made clear how eager Australia was to get farther in the competition. Australia did not advance past the group stages of the 2024 World Cup after Afghanistan’s victory eliminated them from contention for the second time in a row.
“After the last wicket was taken, we were all exhausted. We were desperate to win the tournament again. However, congratulations to Afghanistan; they deserve to be in the semifinals as they defeated both Bangladesh and us,” Marsh remarked.
