Former Pakistani captain Misbah-ul-Haq is reportedly planning to collaborate with the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) once more. In September 2019, he served as the head coach and chief selector of the Pakistani national team. Notably, it was the first time someone held both positions concurrently in Pakistan cricket history.
As head coach, Mickey Arthur was replaced by Misbah. It’s interesting to note that he played under Arthur, who served as the Test team’s captain for a year during which Pakistan topped the world rankings. Pakistan’s 2-0 loss to New Zealand during his maiden tour as head coach. His leadership helped Pakistan defeat South Africa in a Test series for the first time since 2003 following the New Zealand trip. But in September 2021, he gave up his position as coach.
Cricketmood reports that the captain of the 2012 Asia Cup champion team will advise PCB president Zaka Ashraf on cricket matters. The first significant action by the new management in running Pakistan cricket will be this appointment.
On July 24, Misbah-ul-Haq and the PCB had a meeting to discuss his appointment.
Since he won’t be paid, the former cricket player’s position will probably be an honorary one. Since his resignation in September 2021—just before Ramiz Raja was chosen PCB chairman—nearly two years have elapsed. The 49-year-old has since served as an analyst and subject matter expert for a number of TV networks, which he is expected to keep.
Most people know Misbah-ul-Haq for his unshakable demeanor. Misbah’s calm demeanor was exactly what the team needed when he assumed the captaincy role after the tumultuous period Pakistan cricket had gone through. He used to be a hitter who let down bowlers with his improvisations or who softly defended with steadfast patience.
In 75 Test matches, he has scored 5222 runs with an average of 46.62 and a strike rate of 44.53, with 10 hundreds and 39 fifty-sixes. He participated in 162 ODI games, scoring 5122 runs overall, including 42 hundreds, for an average of 43.40 and a strike rate of 73.75. He has played 39 T20I games and scored 788 runs total.
