Former Australian wicketkeeper-batter Adam Gilchrist and England’s Michael Vaughan were challenged to play the Dhoni, Kohli, and Sharma game “Play, Sell, or Bench” in a recent Club Prairie Fire podcast. With his team, Vaughan decided to “play” MS Dhoni, stating, “I don’t think anyone’s been better playing MS Dhoni.” With the justification, “No, Virat won’t find a place, MS is a captain, I’m getting rid of Virat,” he made the decision to “sell” Kohli. He has never won an IPL, thus I am getting rid of him.” In conclusion, he decided to “bench” Sharma, declaring that “Rohit will be MS’s substitute on the bench.”
In the long history of Indian cricket, three names have given immense joy to fans for nearly two decades, MS Dhoni, Virat Kohli, and Rohit Sharma. These three have not only led India to numerous victories but have also changed Indian cricket in their own way.
While Dhoni’s Chennai Super Kings and Rohit’s Mumbai Indians have each won five IPL championships, Kohli’s time with Royal Challengers Bengaluru has witnessed some outstanding individual performances despite his team’s lack of a trophy.
Given his accomplishments as a captain in both international and IPL cricket, Michael Vaughan’s choice to play Dhoni makes sense
Under the guidance of these three legendary players, the Indian cricket team has had a golden age. India won three ICC titles under MS Dhoni’s leadership: the 2013 Champions Trophy, the 2011 ODI World Cup, and the 2007 T20 World Cup. India rose to the top of the Test rankings under Kohli, and the team made it to the World Test Championship final. As for Sharma, he carried on the tradition by winning the T20 World Cup in 2024, ending India’s 11-year ICC drought, and earning another World Test Championship final berth.
