Ahead of the 2025 Major League Cricket (MLC) season, MI New York (MINY) has added two key players to their roster: Afghan all-rounder Azmatullah Omarzai and South African wicketkeeper-batter Quinton de Kock. These additions will bolster an already formidable team as MINY attempts to recover from a dismal season the previous year.
The New York-based team had an incredible first season in the MLC, winning the title in 2023.
But even with an experienced core that included Trent Boult, Rashid Khan, Nicholas Pooran, and Kieron Pollard, the club struggled right away in 2024. The team has decided to make a significant roster overhaul in order to address this, letting go of several well-known international players while bringing in new ones.
After four years, Quinton de Kock, a two-time IPL winner with the Mumbai Indians, rejoins the MI family. The left-hander has been participating in T20 tournaments worldwide since he retired from international cricket in 2024. His addition gives MI New York a match-winning player at the top of the order, where they had trouble the previous season.
Omarzai of Afghanistan, who was just crowned the ODI Player of the Year, is capable of winning matches by bowling as well as batting. Notably, Naveen-ul-Haq, an Afghan pacer, has moved from the Texas Super Kings to MI New York.
Additionally, MINY has kept its core cast of international celebrities, which includes Boult, Rashid, Pooran, and Pollard. But by cutting Tim David, Anrich Nortje, Kagiso Rabada, and emerging star Dewald Brevis, the franchise has taken audacious decisions.
MI New York has added Agni Chopra, Tejinder Dhillon, Sharad Lumba, and Kunwarjeet Singh to its domestic roster in addition to their foreign acquisitions. The team’s retained domestic players, such as Monank Patel, Nosthush Kenjige, and Heath Richards, will be supported by these local talent.
