Marcus Stoinis, the outstanding all-rounder for Australia, has been named the new captain of the Melbourne Stars in anticipation of the Big Bash League (BBL 2024–25) season. Glenn Maxwell, who had just quit, was replaced by him. After Maxwell damaged his leg, he was expected to stay in the position for the 2022–2023 BBL season. But Adam Zampa was selected by the Melbourne Stars to be the team’s captain.
Regarding Marcus Stoinis’ experience as captain, he has only captained Stars once, because Maxwell was unavailable throughout the previous campaign.
He chose to extend his contract for three more years last season, making him the second player after Glenn Maxwell to play 100 BBL games for the Stars. Following his selection as the new captain, the 35-year-old said he felt privileged to assume the position.
“Being handed the position full-time is a huge honour because I enjoyed the opportunity to lead the team last year while Maxi wasn’t there. Every summer for the past ten years, the Stars have been such a constant in my life, and I really feel that the team we have put together, both on and off the pitch, can finally bring the team some much-needed success’, Stoinis added.

Following Marcus Stoinis’ appointment as captain, Maxwell’s leadership during the previous five seasons was acknowledged by Stars general manager Blair Crouch, who also emphasised Maxwell’s contributions to the squad. The Australian cricket player may miss the opening game of the new season due to a hamstring issue.
“First of all, I want to acknowledge and thank Glenn Maxwell for all his efforts in leading the side over the past five seasons and he will continue to be a wonderful resource for everyone at the club,” stated Crouch.
