Meg Lanning, a former Australian cricket player, will serve as assistant coach for the forthcoming Lanning vs. Perry series in Brisbane. During her career, the top-order batswoman led Australia to seven World Cup championships and numerous Ashes victories before retiring from international cricket in 2023.
In order to find potential for the 2027 Under-19 Women’s T20 World Cup, the Lanning vs. Perry series—named for Lanning and her long-time teammate and opponent Ellyse Perry—will be a crucial starting point. The series will start on April 25 and a total of 26 players will be available for selection.
Cassie Brock from Cricket Victoria and Natalie Schilov from Cricket Tasmania will coach the teams. As assistant coaches, Meg Lanning and Australian Gavan Twining will assist them by providing the young players with guidance.
Sonya Thompson, Head of National Development for Cricket Australia, acknowledged the series’ importance, saying it offers young cricket players a chance to learn from and be inspired by one of Australia’s best players for a week.
“We are thrilled to have Meg Lanning join the team as the series’ assistant coach.
Our top up-and-coming cricket players have a fantastic opportunity to spend a week studying under one of Australia’s most accomplished players. Thompson stated.
Thomson added that the goal of Cricket Australia’s high-performance staff’s education sessions is to help and nurture the upcoming generation of players by giving them the skills and information they need to compete at the greatest level of the sport.
“The education sessions, run by CA high-performance staff, are designed to help develop the next generation of cricketers as individuals off the pitch while familiarising them with the expectations and processes required to succeed at the highest level,” she stated.
After retiring from international cricket, the 33-year-old still plays local cricket for Victoria, the Melbourne Stars, and other franchise clubs. She also holds the record for the most hundreds in Women’s ODIs.
