In precisely two years, Australia will mark the 150th anniversary of Test cricket by playing England in a day-night Test match at the MCG.
The MCG, the site of the first Test match in 1877 and the Centenary Test in 1977—both of which, amazingly, were won by Australia by 45 runs—will host the 150th Anniversary Test from March 11–15, 2027, marking the first time the Australian men have played a Test match under lights.
This comes after Australia’s women achieved an Ashes clean sweep in the first-ever day-night Test at the MCG earlier this year.
Since the 150th Anniversary Test will take place outside of the school holiday, more people will be able to attend and observe it if it is a day-night test.
This event is receiving important assistance from the Victorian Government.
“The 150th Anniversary Test at the MCG will be one of the great cricket events, and playing under lights will be a fantastic way to celebrate both our game’s rich heritage and Test cricket’s modern evolution,” stated Todd Greenberg, CEO of Cricket Australia.
Additionally, it will make it possible for more people to come and witness what promises to be an amazing event.
“I’m confident that the 150th Test will produce its own enduring memories, just as the Centenary Test produced many legendary performances, like as Derek Randall’s valiant century, Rick McCosker’s batting with a fractured jaw, and David Hookes’ five consecutive boundaries off Tony Greig.
We are excited to further commemorate this momentous anniversary as it approaches, and this season’s Ashes Series will pique interest in this match in precisely two years. We express our gratitude to the Melbourne Cricket Club and the Victorian Government for their outstanding assistance in hosting this historic Test match.
“With the increasingly complicated international schedule, it takes a lot of planning and support to conduct an event like this, and we are thankful to everyone, including the Melbourne Cricket Club and the Victorian Government, for their enthusiasm to host this momentous Test match,” stated Peter Roach, CA Head of Cricket Operations and Scheduling. Like the 1977 Centenary Test, the 150th Anniversary Test will be a memorable occasion that will be remembered for a very long time by those who attend.
