Sam Konstas, the rookie batter for Australia, was given a shoulder bump by the veteran, which drew harsh criticism from both critics and the Australian media. On Day 2, he came out to bat to boos from the furious Australian fans at the MCG.
He did, however, score 36 runs after playing 86 balls before leaving off a delivery outside off-stump, his archenemy. The people around the tunnel made fun of him as he was making his way back to the pavilion. He ignored the verbal dollies at first, but as the throng refused to stop, he sent back a look.
After appearing to lose his temper, Virat Kohli was led by the security guard, and the incident’s images have gone viral on social media.
Though neither Kohli nor the BCCI have formally protested about the event, Melbourne Cricket Club CEO Stuart Fox has spoken out about the heckling Kohli endured.
When the player is being heavily contacted by fans, you’re never at ease. In your role as operator, you are always observing. Last night, I went and examined the vision. Security has been speaking with me this morning. Since they feel at ease, India has not filed an official complaint. Fox stated, “I believe there was some late-night heckling, and Kohli clearly popped his head back.”
“If there was actual abuse and any physical contact or abuse that went beyond the acceptable, I’ll be worried. That’s where we constantly check to make sure everyone is acting appropriately. I’m a huge fan of Kohli and his contributions to our game. I’m not a huge fan of the jeering. In my opinion, he deserves praise for establishing the rivalry he does,” he said.
