In just four IPL 2024 games, star bowler Mayank Yadav took seven wickets at an economy rate of 6.98 for the Lucknow Super Giants. The 22-year-old bowled at a constant pace of over 150 kmph in his maiden encounter against Punjab Kings, picking up a three-fer. Though he was considered the next great thing in fast bowling, he was forced to withdraw from the competition due to a lower abdominal pain, and he hasn’t played a game since.
The batsman from Delhi, who is presently undergoing training at the National Cricket Academy, is being closely watched by the BCCI, which recognises his potential. Expected to play a part in the forthcoming Duleep Trophy, which is scheduled to start on September 5, he was left out of the preparations because BCCI authorities felt the young player wasn’t ready yet.
The coach of Sonnet Club, Devendra Sharma, who has long coached Mayank Yadav, recently provided an update on the pacer.
In addition to saying that the pacer bowls in the morning and then undergoes rehabilitation sessions, he said he has requested to be removed from red-ball cricket for the time being due to potential health risks.
“He’s required to bowl first thing in the morning, then go to rehab, then work out. He then uses the nets to practise bowling once more. He told me that he does all of this stuff there on a daily basis,” Devendra was cited by the Times of India as saying.
“I asked him why he wasn’t included in the Duleep Trophy squads, as he bowls eight to ten overs every day. Mayank provided a response, saying, “Sir, I have been told not to go into it as I can’t put too much load on my body and concentrate on white-ball cricket for now.”

Mayank was recently observed bowling in the NCA nets to players who were vying for the Duleep Trophy, including Yashasvi Jaiswal. Should everything proceed as planned, he may aim for a return during the domestic season.
