In the Group C Round 1 match of the Vijay Hazare Trophy 2023, Karnataka captain Mayank Agarwal scored a brilliant 157 (133) against Jammu Kashmir on Thursday, November 23 at Narendra Modi Stadium B Ground, Ahmedabad. Agarwal proved he made the right choice by batting first after winning the toss and starting his team off brilliantly with opener Ravikumar Samarth.

The pair took on the J&K bowling and put on a huge 267-run stand off 233 balls for the opening wicket. In the 39th over, Rasikh Salam thoroughly outclassed Samarth, breaking their resistance. Agarwal, on the other hand, carried on with his innings from the opposite end and amassed an enormous 157 off 133 balls, slamming eight sixes and eleven fours.

Notably, Mayank Agarwal, who has amassed over 4,500 runs in his career, achieved his 14th List A hundred in this manner.

Following the loss of his opening partner, Devdutt Padikkal provided Agarwal with solid assistance with an innings of 71* (35) during which he smashed five sixes and four fours.

Thanks to their innings, Karnataka scored an incredible 402/2 in the 50 overs that were allocated to them. Among the wickets were Sahil Lotra (1/55, 6 overs) and Rasikh Salam (1/82, 10 overs) from J&K.

In response, Vasuki Koushik dismissed J&K’s opener, Qamran Iqbal (5 off 17), early in the innings. Following the early blow, Vivrant Sharma (41 off 46) and captain Shubham Khajuria (29 off 24) scored 65 runs for the second wicket. Nevertheless, the pair lost their wickets swiftly as they were unable to maintain the necessary run rate.

J&K saw a sharp decline as a result, going from 70/1 to 109/8. Yudhvir Singh Charak’s heroic 64 off 39 helped his team surpass the 150-run threshold. Vijaykumar Vyshak (4/57, 9 overs) took the most wickets for Karnataka, while Krishnappa Gowtham (2/45, 7 overs) also claimed two wickets as J&K was ultimately bowled out for 180 in 30.4 overs. With two points from their decisive 222-run victory, Karnataka is securely atop Group C.
