During the last three Indian Premier League (IPL) seasons, Matthew Wade played as a batsman and wicketkeeper for the Gujarat Titans. But in front of the forthcoming season, the Australian cricket player has joined the team’s support staff. As the assistant coach, the 37-year-old will work alongside head coach Ashish Nehra, batting coach Parthiv Patel, assistant coaches Aashish Kapoor and Narender Negi, and other backroom staff members.
In 2011, Matthew Wade made his IPL debut.
However, because he was signed by the Gujarat Titans in the IPL 2022 mega-auction, he had to wait 11 years to rejoin the competition. Despite playing ten games during the season, he was unable to contribute. Wade participated in a few games last season but was not included in the IPL 2023 Playing XI. The southpaw scored 161 runs in 12 games with the Titans.
In October of last year, he announced his retirement from international cricket and went straight into coaching. While the primary coaching staff started getting ready for the Border-Gavaskar Trophy match against India, he filled in as Australia’s stand-in assistant coach during a Twenty20 International series against Pakistan.
Before participating in the two lengthier formats of international cricket the next year, Matthew Wade made his first appearance in the Twenty20 International in 2011. He completed with 4,682 international runs from 36 Tests, 97 ODIs, and 92 T20Is. His game-winning cameo against Pakistan in the 2021 T20 World Cup semifinals is among the high points of his cricketing career. Australia won the T20 World Cup for the first time after defeating New Zealand in the championship match. Wade had also served as a stand-in captain for the Australians.
In 2022, the Gujarat Titans made their IPL debut and won the coveted title, capping off an incredible start to the league. They lost to the Chennai Super Kings on the final ball and ended as runners-up in the 2023 Indian Premier League. They finished at No. 9 last season, just ahead of the Mumbai Indians, but it was a huge disaster. In the 18th iteration of the lucrative league, the Titans would like to make a good comeback.
