Matthew Mott steps down as head coach of England's white-ball setup

In white-ball cricket, Matthew Mott has resigned from his position as England’s head coach. Marcus Trescothick, the assistant coach, has been selected as a temporary replacement. On Tuesday, July 30, the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) issued an official statement confirming the development.

England made the decision to use separate coaches for white-ball and red-ball cricket in May 2022. Matthew Mott was named head coach of the ODIs and T20Is, while Brendon McCullum assumed the post in Tests.

The latter helped the Three Lions win the T20 World Cup in 2022, which brought them instant success. Jos Buttler and company, however, had a dismal campaign in the ODI World Cup last year and were eliminated in the T20 World Cup semi-finals this past month.

Mott thanked the players, the management, and the ECB for their support during his term, saying it was an honour to be the England team’s coach. He also praised the England supporters for sticking by their team through good times and bad.

“It has been a privilege to coach the England Men’s team, and I am incredibly proud of it. In the ECB press release, Mott stated, “We have given it our all in an attempt to succeed over the last two years, and I am immensely proud of the spirit and passion that the squad has showed throughout that period, including a fantastic T20 World Cup triumph in 2022.

“I want to express my gratitude to the players, staff, and ECB community for their dedication, encouragement, and hard work during my tenure. I’m leaving with amazing memories and a tonne of wonderful friendships. Lastly, I want to express my gratitude to the England supporters, who have consistently supported us and helped us out tremendously wherever we have gone in the world,” he continued.
