Gurmeet Singh Bhamrah, the owner of a Mumbai T20 League franchise, has been banned for life by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) Ombudsman Justice Arun Mishra for breaking the BCCI’s Anti-Corruption Code. The ruling comes after claims that Bhamrah tried to rig a game in the league’s second season.
Former Supreme Court of India judge Justice Mishra highlighted the importance of taking the toughest possible stance against corrupt cricket practices. Given the gravity of the conduct, he issued an order that carried the harshest penalty allowed under the regulations.
The incident in question happened during the 2019 Mumbai T20 League semifinal. According to reports, Bhamrah went up to a player with the intention of fixing the game. But after the player informed the appropriate authorities, an investigation was launched.
Bhamrah was convicted following an investigation by the BCCI’s Anti-Corruption Bureau.
After that, the case was sent to the Ombudsman, who confirmed the accusations and provided a thorough justification for the lifelong ban. Additionally, it was disclosed that Bhamrah owned business stakes in other international cricket leagues, including one in Canada.
In the meantime, the Mumbai T20 League’s next season is scheduled to start on May 25 following the end of the 2025 Indian Premier League. The current teams, the North Mumbai Panthers, ARCS Andheri, Triumph Knights Mumbai North East, Namo Bandra Blasters, Eagle Thane Strikers, and Aakash Tigers Mumbai Western Suburbs, will be among the eight teams participating in this edition.
In an effort to increase the competition’s worth and visibility, the Mumbai Cricket Association (MCA) has recruited well-known players to play in the event and raise awareness of the league.
Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the Mumbai T20 League was stopped following two seasons in 2018 and 2019. After nearly six years, the third edition will take place, and it will be fascinating to see which players establish themselves in the league.
