Martin Guptill retired from international cricket

Martin Guptill declared his intention to retire from all international cricket competitions. In 367 matches in all formats, the 38-year-old played for the Black Caps (198 ODIs, 122 T20Is, and 47 Tests).

At the moment, Martin Guptill leads his country in T20Is with 3531 runs in 118 innings at a strike rate of 135.70. In ODIs, Guptill is ranked behind Stephen Fleming and Ross Taylor in the 50-over run-scoring statistics with 7346 runs at an average of 41.73.

In the 2024–25 Super Smash, he is presently playing for the Auckland Aces. He is anticipated to stay involved in domestic T20 franchise competitions for some time to come.

For the immediate future, Martin Guptill will continue to play T20 franchise cricket, where he is currently leading from the front for the Auckland Aces in the Super Smash this season.

He thanked his teammates, coaches, manager, family, and supporters in a heartfelt statement for supporting him over his cricketing career.

Playing for New Zealand was always my dream as a child, and I am extremely fortunate and delighted to have represented my nation in 367 games. I will always treasure the times I spent with a fantastic bunch of guys while wearing the silver fern. I would want to express my sincere gratitude to all of my teammates and coaching staff throughout the years, especially Mark O’Donnell, who has been a constant source of support and guidance throughout my career and has coached me since the Under-19 level.

My manager Leanne McGoldrick deserves special recognition for all of the hard work that goes on behind the scenes, and I will always be grateful for your support,” Guptill said, as reported by New Zealand Cricket.

“Thank you to my wife, Laura, and our lovely kids, Harley and Teddy! I appreciate all that you have given up for me and our family, Laura. Through all of the game’s ups and downs, you have been my strongest ally, my pillar of support, and my advisor. I will always be appreciative. Lastly, I would like to express my gratitude to all of the cricket supporters in New Zealand and around the globe for their unwavering support over the years,” he continued.

The first player from New Zealand to score a double-century in ODIs was Martin Guptill.

This historic occasion occurred during the 2015 Cricket World Cup match versus the West Indies. In the Wellington quarterfinal, he hammered a fierce undefeated 163-ball 237. In 2009, he made his global debut against this same opposition.

In his first ODI, he became the first Kiwi player to reach a century. The two T20I hundreds that Guptill achieved were in 2012 against South Africa at Buffalo Park and in 2018 against Australia in Auckland, six years later.

He brought about a revolution in fielding standards in both New Zealand cricket and global cricket. Guptill held onto 222 catches during his illustrious international career. One of the most memorable moments in international cricket history was when he struck a straight shot from deep backward square-leg to ruin India’s chances of reaching the 2019 international Cup final.
