Marsh Owen was recognised for his outstanding season with the Hobart Hurricanes in the most recent Big Bash League, while Mitchell Marsh returns to the Australian colours to captain the club. Matt Kuhnemann’s first Australian T20 team has been announced.
A 16-player squad for the five-match T20 Series against the West Indies in Jamaica and St. Kitt’s next month was revealed today by Cricket Australia’s National Selection Panel (NSP).
Owen was the leading scorer in the BBL during a season that included 108 off 42 deliveries in the final, while Marsh is coming off a scorching IPL tournament with 627 runs for the Lucknow Super Giants, including his first century.
Conversely, Cooper Connolly and Cameron Green make their injury-recovery comebacks. After being managed for the final Twenty20 series against Pakistan prior to the Test season, Josh Hazlewood also returns to the team.
After the Test Series in the West Indies, Pat Cummins, Travis Head, and Mitchell Starc will return to Australia. Marcus Stoinis, Jake Fraser-McGurk, and Xavier Bartlett are not on the team for this series.
As they prepare for the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup in India and Sri Lanka next year, Australia has won 12 of their last 14 games.
“We have a busy T20 schedule coming up through this Series, followed by three home matches against South Africa and New Zealand and five against India as we continue to hone and assemble a squad we believe will be the right fit for the World Cup on the subcontinent,” stated George Bailey, chair of selectors.
“A handful of players who are not on the team can still have an impact during the Big Bash and the upcoming Indian Series. As we get closer to the World Cup, the relationships, role growth, and combinations we will have as alternatives are all improving nicely. In our T20 space, it’s an exciting time,” he continued.
