"Very glad we're not playing here anymore." Markram is happy to forego the Trinidad pitch in the final

After his team made it to the T20 World Cup 2024 final, South Africa’s skipper, Aiden Markram, expressed his opinions on the much-discussed field at the Brian Lara Stadium in Trinidad. Markram was relieved that the Providence Stadium in Guyana will host the final because the uneven bounce of the Trinidad pitch presented a lot of difficulties.

Afghanistan could only muster 56 runs in the challenging Trinidad conditions, which was the lowest total in a T20 World Cup semi-final. Thanks to strong efforts by Markram and Reeza Hendricks, South Africa was able to hunt down the mark in 8.5 overs despite early difficulties.

In his post-match analysis, Markram noted that while hitters had encountered challenges during the competition, T20 cricket should not necessarily reward batting.

“Yeah, you want entertainment, but I mean T20 cricket overall. Throughout the competition, we have faced some really difficult wickets. Once again, the wicket was quite difficult tonight. It’s difficult to determine whether a pitch is bad because it can’t just be a batter’s game, but Markram told the media during the post-match news conference, “I think if we reflect on this wicket, we’ll probably be pretty happy that we’re not playing here again.” India Today reported what Markram said.

He emphasised that both sides faced the same wicket challenges in spite of the difficult conditions, highlighting the necessity to adjust and concentrate on earning victory by leveraging advantages.

“Having said that, let’s continue to focus on the good things. Wickets are hard to hit. On this particular night, both teams’ wickets are the same. Thus, the most crucial thing is probably to figure out how to win,” he continued.

Under Markram’s direction, South Africa made history by reaching their first-ever T20 World Cup final. The final, which will take place at Providence Stadium on June 29, offers a new challenge as well as an opportunity for South Africa to demonstrate their abilities on a different ground.
