There are people who want to play for West Indies, but not as many as there may have been in the past: Ian Bishop

Ian Bishop

Ian Bishop, a former cricket player, is unhappy with how the West Indies are doing in the ODI World Cup Qualifiers. Notably, the team led by Shai Hope did very badly and is already out of the race. When asked about this, Bishop lashed out at bowlers, saying that some of them aren’t good enough to play for the national team. He also said that the level of skill has dropped a lot and that this is one of the reasons why West Indies cricket is falling apart.

The 55-year-old, on the other hand, wants the team’s leaders to put their faith in Daren Sammy and Shai Hope. He thinks that the team has changed a lot recently and wants everyone to trust them because of this.

“I wouldn’t say that the pull that players felt in the ’60s and ’70s should be the same in the ’00s. So, we have to figure out what each person wants, which will be different for each one. When I talk to players, they still want to play for West Indies, but there aren’t as many good ones as there might have been in the past, Bishop told ESPNcricinfo.

“We’ve got a new leader and a new coach. Now, we have to give the people in charge time and help, and make sure they have the staff they need. Zimbabwe, for example, won this event with only a few players, so why can’t West Indies do the same if they focus on their pool? he added.

In the Caribbean, we have serious economic problems. Ian Bishop said that West Indies has serious economic problems right now, but he pointed out that Zimbabwe had the same problems a few years ago, but has changed a lot in the last couple of years.

“We will never be on top like we were in the ’80s and the first half of the ’90s. I think there are too many good teams around the world. We have big economic problems in the Caribbean, and governments all over the world need to look into them. But I still think we have enough to do even better next time, if we work together, if I look at where Zimbabwe was, what problems they had, and how well they played in this event, for example,” Bishop said in closing.
