After a valiant 12-year fight with breast cancer, Lynn Stewart, the wife of former England and Surrey captain Alec Stewart, passed away. In observance of the Division One County Championship match between Surrey and Hampshire on Monday, flags were flown at half-mast over the Micky Stewart Members Pavilion at the Kia Oval. In remembrance of her, Surrey players also donned black armbands.
Alec Stewart father, Micky Stewart, played for Surrey from 1954 to 1972, and Alec did the same and played for the team from 1981 to 2003. An important place in the club’s history is occupied by the Stewart family. Alec returned to Surrey as Director of Cricket in 2013, although he resigned from his position last year to take care of his wife.
At the time, Alec Stewart stated, “I want to give her and my family more of my time over the coming years than this job allows.”
In Alec Stewart’s final full season, Surrey won the 2024 County Championship, their third straight championship. Prior to moving into a part-time position as a High-Performance Cricket Advisor, the 62-year-old had won four championships during his tenure.
Everyone at Surrey County Cricket Club sends Alec Stewart and the Stewart family their deepest sympathies. The family has our deepest sympathies, and we will keep doing everything in our power to support them. In the interim, we kindly request that people respect their privacy during this trying time,” club chair Ollie Slipper said in a statement.
In addition to playing for the national team in 170 One-Day Internationals, the wicketkeeper-batter averaged 39.54 in 133 International Test matches. He scored 26,165 runs in 447 games at a remarkable average of 40.06 in first-class cricket.
