Luke Williams is appointed by RCB as the Women's Premier League's 2024 head coach.

Luke Williams will lead Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) in the 2024 Women’s Premier League, the team announced on Saturday, September 30. Ben Sawyer, who led the women’s squad in the tournament’s first iteration, will be replaced by the Australian.

Luke Williams will be joining RCB with an impressive track record as a coach.

The 43-year-old, who had previously played First-Class cricket for South Australia, guided the Adelaide Strikers to the WBBL championship in 2022. Prior to that, he served as the team’s coach and led them to second-place finishes in 2019 and 2021.

Luke Williams was also the Southern Brave’s assistant coach when they won the Women’s Hundred 2023, the team’s first championship. He also served as the head coach of the South Australian Scorpions, a 50-over team in the Women’s National Cricket League.

He indicated his desire to collaborate with RCB in the upcoming campaign. “I am overjoyed to have been given this opportunity with RCB and cannot wait to begin the team’s WPL season two preparations. As we strive to bring a daring and exciting style of play and success to our enormous and ardent fan base, I look forward to working with a playing group that will feature a number of the most exciting players in Indian and international cricket, Williams added.

Former head coach Ben Sawyer received praise from RCB chairman and chief commercial officer Prathmesh Mishra for inspiring the team to strive for improvement.

We are appreciative of Ben Sawyer for assembling a team for the first Women’s Premier League. The group that Sawyer leaves behind has demonstrated a desire to improve. I wish him the best of luck in his future endeavors and I warmly welcome Luke Williams to assume leadership of the RCB women’s team and help it realize its full potential,” Mishra added.

In the meantime, Rajesh V. Menon, Vice President & Head of RCB, commented on Luke Williams’ hiring by saying, “Williams has been a part of several champion sides and an inspiration to many players over the world. He is welcome at Royal Challengers Bangalore, I say.
