Sanju Samson made it into the Indian team for the T20 World Cup following an outstanding season with the Rajasthan Royals in the IPL 2024. The cash-rich league saw the keeper-batter finish seventh in the Orange Cap list with 531 runs scored in 16 games. Since KL Rahul and Dinesh Karthik were also being considered, there were a lot of conversations over the keeper-batter position. Samson, though, eventually earned a chance to play for the national team after demonstrating his abilities in crucial games.
The cricketer from Kerala described his time spent with the team thus far, describing it as a “dream come true” experience. The cricket player mentioned that he is getting ready for the major tournament well in advance and that he is training hard in the gym and on the nets. Samson disclosed that everything happened on its own and he didn’t need to push himself. The 29-year-old said that being around Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma inspires and motivates him, and he also mentioned the value of having them on the squad.
“I am at a completely different stage and I am telling myself ‘you are somewhere where many and thousands of people dream about’,” Samson said to BCCI. “IPL has been entirely off (from my head) since the minute I came here (in the USA).
“What do I need to do?” was my thought at the time. Mentally, I didn’t need to push myself to complete the tasks I needed to do—workouts, recovery, and net sessions. Everything was meant to happen automatically, and it did. You become motivated and encouraged as soon as you enter the environment and meet Mr. Virat Kohli and Mr. Rohit Sharma. The only thing on the horizon is how Sanju Samson can help the Indian team win games; there isn’t really any looking back,” he continued.
Notably, in the warm-up match before the T20 World Cup versus Bangladesh, Samson scored just one run. Alongside Rohit, he did not impress throughout the opening over. Samson would have to miss out since Rishabh Pant, the starting keeper, performed excellent against Bangladesh and Virat Kohli is scheduled to play against Ireland on June 5.
