Captain Laura Wolvaardt sums up South Africa's disappointing show in T20 World Cup final vs New Zealand

After the powerplay, South Africa was 47/0 after chasing 159 runs against New Zealand in the final. They had a strong start thanks to captain Laura Wolvaardt, but shortly after the powerplay, South Africa’s fortunes abruptly shifted as they lost wickets at critical points. They lost the match in Dubai by 32 runs after unexpectedly falling to 77/5.

In his analysis of their performance in the summit battle, Wolvaardt pointed out that they gave up a lot of runs in the opening inning, which is when the game lost control of them. She clarified that South Africa was under pressure after the White Ferns’ strong batting start in the powerplay and subsequent strong player rotation. Additionally, the 25-year-old thinks that they were in the zone to pursue the total but lost steam following the powerplay, which cost them the championship.

We probably allowed them to score a few too many runs with the bat, in my opinion. They had very serious intentions when they came out, and I believe it somewhat caught us off guard. The ICC cited Wolvaardt as saying, “We thought we could sort of ride it out, hopefully, score a wicket or two, but they sort of just kept going and rotated (the strike) really well.”

We were maybe a little off, but I believe they had a great last five or six overs where they really pushed that run rate. We believed the game was on after our bat Powerplay, but we actually lost some momentum outside of it,” she continued.

There are numerous advantages to consider: Laura Wolvaardt

South Africa lost to Australia in the 2022 T20 World Cup final and to New Zealand in the 2024 final. Speaking about the same, Wolvaardt said that while it’s upsetting, the group is young and bright, and he thinks the players will have a lot to give in the future.

Although it’s undoubtedly frustrating, I believe that, looking back, we still had a respectable tournament because we placed second in a field of about ten teams. There are many good things to consider.

There’s a younger group as well, so I think it’s quite exciting that they can make it to the finals. There’s a lot to look forward to. Wolvaardt remarked, “I’m excited to see what we do in the upcoming World Cups.”
