IND vs NZ 2024: Tom Latham keeping 'fingers crossed' on Kane Williamson's injury

A groin issue has forced Kane Williamson to miss the second Test match against India in Pune. In addition to missing the first match in Bengaluru, there are questions about his fitness for the third Test match at Mumbai’s Wankhede Stadium. Although Captain Tom Latham has stated that he is recuperating well, he has not yet provided a return date.

According to the 32-year-old, Williamson is closely collaborating with the medical staff and his progress is tracked daily. After the Pune match, he indicated, a call regarding his availability for the third Test would be made.

We’ll have to wait and see if Kane is ready, but it’s a day-by-day situation. His strong collaboration with the domestic medical team is evident. It is really a waiting game.

“Hopefully, after the Test, we’ll learn a little bit more,” India Today cited Tom Latham as saying.

The first Test in Bengaluru was won easily by New Zealand by eight wickets, even without Williamson. In the first innings, the bowling unit showed its strength by dismissing the Rohit Sharma-led team for a mere 46 runs. However, the Pune surface is designed to favour spinners, which is one reason why the visitors may feel Williamson’s absence.

The 34-year-old has amassed 503 runs at an average of 33.53 in eight Test matches played in India. Given that Willaimson is renowned for playing spin effectively, his experience would have been incredibly beneficial in Pune.

In Pune, New Zealand is anticipated to use a second spinner. Mitchell Santner might return to the starting lineup after missing

the first Test. Rachin Ravindra, Glenn Phillips, and Ajaz Patel give the Kiwis plenty of spin options currently, but they won’t be afraid to switch out a pacer for another spinner.
