Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) announced on Friday, February 16, that the fifth edition of the Lanka Premier League (LPL) will start on July 1 and conclude on July 21.
The T20 extravaganza will feature 24 matches in total, 20 of which will be league contests and the remaining 4 being knockout games, much as last year.
There will be five teams vying for the title of Sri Lanka’s top domestic Twenty20 league. There will be a minimum of 20 players on each squad and a maximum of 24 players per side, six of whom may be foreign nationals.
During the league stage, all five teams will play each other twice, with the top four teams moving on to the knockout stages. In Qualifier 1, the top two teams will square off; the victor advances to the final. Teams that place third and fourth, on the other hand, will play one another in the elimination. In Qualifier 2, the victor of the eliminator game will face the loser of Qualifier 1 to determine the second finalist.

The Sri Lanka Cricket Board will release the full season schedule in the upcoming weeks. The B Love Kandy squad, led by Angelo Mathews, won the championship for the first time last season after defeating Dambulla Aura in the championship game. They will be looking to defend their title in the next one.
Wanindu Hasaranga was named the previous edition’s Player of the Tournament.
Notably, the Jaffna Kings (Jaffna Stallions in the first season) emerged victorious from the tournament’s first three seasons after being eliminated by B-Love Kandy in the previous season’s eliminator. Because he was the top run scorer at the end of the previous season, Wanindu Hasaranga was named Player of the Tournament.
With two fifties under his belt, he amassed 279 runs in nine innings at an average of 34.87 and a strike rate of 189.79. As spectators get ready to witness the finest cricketers in Sri Lanka and the world perform for 21 days straight, the 2017 season promises to be even more thrilling.
