As Usman Khawaja struggles with a decline in his Test cricket form, Marnus Labuschagne has advised the critics to refrain from giving him advice. Khawaja has yet to reach 50 centuries in the 13 Test innings left in 2025, with the exception of the 232-run knock in January.
Khwaja’s age and international cricket experience were highlighted by Labuschagne, who also gave praise to the way the left-handed hitter has evolved over time.
“He’s 38 years old and has a lot of life experience, so I don’t think he needs counsel. He is a fantastic player, and the way he has approached his game—moving from a No. 3 to a No. 4 and then opening the batting—has allowed him to handle some challenging situations.
According to India Today, Labuschagne said, “He’s just been awesome.”
The 31-year-old emphasised Khawaja’s Test results and said that the media shouldn’t make assumptions about when he should retire.
The most crucial element, in my opinion, is that the team always comes first. Without taking anything away, he is an incredible player. He has played for Australia in 85 Test matches, averaging 45 [43.56] each time, all around the world. But whether he should choose when he is done is not up to me, and neither is it up to any of us,” he continued.
Speaking of the ongoing Ashes, Australia won the series’ opening match in Perth by eight wickets in just two full playing days. In Brisbane, the second Test will be played under pink balls. On Thursday, December 4, the game is expected to start.
The hosts have declared an unaltered roster. The Australians will be eager to extend their lead, so Khawaja’s performance will be closely watched.
