Although there hasn’t been a formal approach for the position, Kumar Sangakkara described the idea of coaching England in white-ball cricket as “exciting”.
Following Matthew Mott’s resignation on Tuesday, July 30, the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) is in the process of hiring a new head coach for the white-ball team. The Australian coach led two disappointing title defences at the 2023 ODI World Cup and the June T20 World Cup. In the meantime, Marcus Trescothick, a former batter for England who served as Mott’s assistant coach, was named the acting head coach for the September white-ball home series against Australia.
According to reports, Sangakkara is vying for the coveted position of full-time England white-ball coach. Jos Buttler, the captain of England’s white-ball team, and the director of cricket for the Rajasthan Royals have collaborated extensively throughout the Indian Premier League (IPL). However, the legend from Sri Lanka didn’t reveal too much about his potential to lead the Three Lions.
“Well, I am aware that (my name) has been brought up for whatever reason, but no real approach has been made. Although I believe that working with England white-ball is a fantastic opportunity, there are a lot of deserving applicants. According to Sangakkara, who is a part of Sky Sports’ commentary team for The Hundred, “I think Matthew Mott has done a really good job,” as reported by NDTV.
The 46-year-old was pleased to see Buttler remain the white-ball teams’ captain. Kumar Sangakkara also gave the England men’s cricket managing director, Rob Key, credit for his vision for the game.
“It’s fantastic that Jos Buttler will continue to lead the team as it develops because this is a terrific time for the side to be what it was and what it wants to become in the future. I believe that the England team has made excellent decisions. Rob Key has shown me a great deal of leadership.”I think he’s been a really smart, practical man, very forward-thinking in setting the vision for England cricket and very commonsense in his decision-making,” the Matale native said.
The former skipper of Sri Lanka declared himself content with his position with the Rajasthan Royals, the first-ever IPL champions.

“Right now, I’m really content. Over the past four years, I have truly liked my career and the Rajasthan Royals experience has been quite satisfying,” the southpaw stated.
