Former Women’s Big Bash League (WBBL) champion captain Kirby Short, who previously worked as a broadcaster and director of Queensland Cricket, moves into a high-performance position. Short is now the new head of female cricket for Cricket Victoria.
Kirby Short played 67 games in the league as a top spin bowling all-rounder and led the Brisbane Heat Women to consecutive WBBL victories in 2018–19 and 2019–20. In 54 innings, she amassed 945 runs, including three half-centuries. In her legendary WNCL (Women’s National Cricket League) career, Short also served as the captain of Queensland Fire. Following Sharelle McMahon’s resignation last year to return to netball in a high performance role, she takes over as Victoria’s new director of female cricket under general manager of high performance Graham Manou.
Although Short ended his playing career in 2020, he has continued to be involved in the sport as a commentator for Fox Sports and Channel Seven and as a director for Queensland Cricket.
Kirby Short stated that she is thrilled to be joining Victoria, where she has family ties, even if she is from Queensland.
“It seems right that I have the opportunity to help progress women’s cricket in this state, as my grandfather, Mick Harvey, was a proud Victorian who grew up in Fitzroy. I’m excited to take on this new task in Melbourne, working with the exceptional players and committed staff to build on Victoria’s strong sporting heritage,” ESPNcricinfo reported Short as saying.
Manou welcomed Kirby into the setup in the meanwhile, showcasing her experience and leadership skills. He thought her inclusion would raise the bar for Victoria’s women’s cricket.
Kirby Short plays a vital part in our cricket performance program, and we are happy to have him join Cricket Victoria. As we continue to invest in and advance women’s cricket in our state, Kirby’s leadership abilities and wealth of elite cricket experience will be crucial,” he said.
