In addition to losing, Pakistan’s trip of New Zealand was marred by controversy after the third ODI at Mount Maunganui, where all-rounder Khushdil Shah got into a furious altercation with jeering supporters. After responding to remarks made by the crowd, an enraged Khushdil had to be held by teammates and security guards.
The incident happened shortly after Pakistan lost by 43 runs. The hosts had just finished a 4-1 loss in the previous T20I leg and a 3-0 thumping in the ODI series. As the players were leaving the pitch, some supporters reportedly made disparaging remarks to them, according to witnesses. Unable to control his feelings, Khushdil turned around and faced the onlookers. He persisted in his rejoinder in spite of the attempts of other players and security personnel.
Notably, Khushdil Shah has experienced disciplinary issues during the trip before.
When he ran towards New Zealand spinner Zac Foulkes while taking a single in the ninth over during the T20I series, he was given three demerit points and fined half of his match money.
