After returning to the Big Bash League (BBL) and striking a half-century, former Australian Test cricketer Usman Khawaja emulated one of his teammates’ celebrations. Despite making four appearances in the tournament at that time, it was Usman first BBL fifty in three years.
With 22 balls remaining, the Brisbane Heat easily defeated the Sydney Thunder by seven wickets thanks in large part to his effort. Sydney Thunder scored 180 runs when they batted first, with David Warner leading the way with 82 off 56 balls. Together with Jake Weatherald, he scored 57 runs for the first wicket. Later, he and Matt Renshaw formed a vital 93-run partnership.
Usman celebrated turning fifty by mimicking the V-grip celebration that Steven Smith famously executed against Jofra Archer during the 2025–26 Ashes series. Before reenacting his former Australian teammate’s celebration, Khawaja reached the milestone with a boundary after hitting seven fours and three sixes during his innings.

Khawaja led the chase in response with a smooth 78 off 48 deliveries.
The chase was well under control by the time Khawaja was removed in the sixteenth over. Max Bryant scored the final runs as the Brisbane Heat finished the chase in the next over. Khawaja was chosen Player of the Match for his role in winning the game.
After the game, Khawaja stated he just enjoys batting and was thrilled to take in the enthusiasm of the Brisbane crowd. He added that while it was sad to miss the most recent Ashes Test at the WACA, he believed his performance in the game more than made up for it. Khawaja went on to say that he concentrated on finding his groove at the crease rather than giving format changes any thought.
“To be honest, I absolutely adore batting. I adore the gaffer, the crowd, and the incredible energy. The opportunity to bat in front of these supporters more than makes up for my disappointment at missing the Test match here. During the post-match presentation, Khawaja remarked, “It was unique to be out there and take it all in.”
“When I was batting, I didn’t give the format any thought. I was able to get a few good ones out of the way early, and once you establish that vibe, things get easier. Finding your groove is often the most difficult part,” he continued.
