The Karnataka Housing Board (KHB) recently received approval from Chief Minister Siddaramaiah to build a world-class sports complex in Surya City, Bommasandra, which will include an 80,000-seat cricket stadium. When finished, it would surpass the Narendra Modi venue in Ahmedabad, which can hold 1,32,000 spectators, as the second-largest cricket venue in India.
The KHB will finance the entire INR 1,650 crore project without assistance from the state government. The proposed complex, which spans 100 acres, will accommodate both outdoor and indoor activities. Eight indoor and eight outdoor sporting facilities, cutting-edge gyms, training facilities, swimming pools, guest homes, hostels, three- and five-star hotels, and a convention centre that can accommodate international events will all be included in addition to the cricket stadium.
The government will investigate moving the cricket stadium to a another area. CM Siddaramaiah
Following the devastating stampede outside Bengaluru’s M. Chinnaswamy Stadium on June 4, during Royal Challengers Bengaluru’s celebrations of their IPL 2025 victory, which left 11 people dead and numerous others injured, this decision was taken. After looking into the incident, the Justice John Michael Cunha Commission came to the conclusion that the 32,000-seat stadium, which was only 17 acres in size, was not fit for big events. Additionally, he suggested moving them to a larger area with better parking and amenities. Following the disaster, there has been an increase in demand for the stadium to be moved to the city’s outskirts.
“There is nothing wrong with the government. Although this situation is heartbreaking, the administration did not make a mistake. The government is not in danger of embarrassment because those found guilty have been prosecuted. The administration will investigate the possibility of moving the cricket stadium. No government should allow such an awful occurrence. The Karnataka chief minister had previously stated, “This incident has personally hurt me and the government.”
Several ideas for sports infrastructure are sent to Bengaluru.
The chief of intelligence and his political secretary were replaced, and the chief minister stated that five police officers had been suspended in relation to the incident.
“In this case, five police officers have been suspended. Both the political secretary of the chief minister and the head of intelligence have been replaced. “Adequate action has been taken and the case has been taken seriously,” he continued.
Several plans for sports infrastructure are now being considered in Bengaluru. While the Greater Bengaluru Development Authority (GBDA) is planning a sports city in Bidadi, with Deputy Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar suggesting it should be able to host the Olympic Games, the Bangalore Development Authority (BDA) has called for bids to construct a contemporary stadium in Dr. K. Shivaram Karanth Layout on the northern outskirts of the city.
