The construction of a world-class cricket stadium and sports complex in Anekal, on the southern outskirts of Bengaluru, has received “in-principle” approval from the Karnataka Cabinet and is expected to cost INR 2,350 crore. The new facility, which is situated on 75 acres in Indlavadi village’s Suryanagar Fourth Stage Extension, aims to improve Karnataka’s athletic infrastructure and serve as a location for major events like international cricket.
The cabinet has authorized the idea, according to Law and Parliamentary Affairs Minister H.K. Patil, who also instructed the Housing Department to carry out a viability analysis and prepare a Detailed Project Report (DPR). The DPR will look at long-term operating planning, technical specifications, safety precautions, construction costs, environmental effect, and project scope.
The stadium will serve as Karnataka’s third international cricket venue, after a project in Mysuru was recently approved and another is now being built in Tumakuru.
The M. Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru can only hold 38,000 spectators; in contrast, the Anekal stadium can hold 80,000, more than twice as many. The sports complex would be one of the biggest in India, with 3,000 seats and facilities for 24 indoor and outdoor activities in addition to cricket.
It is anticipated that the Anekal project will propel regional growth.
Following space and infrastructure limitations at M. Chinnaswamy Stadium, the decision was made. Since a terrible stampede that followed the Royal Challengers Bengaluru’s IPL victory in June 2025, which left 11 people dead and numerous others injured, the venue has not hosted international cricket. The Justice John Michael Cunha Commission has suggested moving important cricket matches to locations with more amenities.
It is anticipated that the Anekal project will propel regional development in the interim. In order to manage big crowds, road connectivity, parking, water supply, power, and urban amenities will be improved. Public transportation, security, and emergency services will also be updated. Both immediate and long-term economic gains are expected from these upgrades, which are expected to draw in real estate investment, tourist, and hospitality endeavors.
With its multipurpose design, the stadium can accommodate business gatherings, concerts, and cultural events, guaranteeing year-round activity and income. For fans, players, and officials, cutting-edge facilities like media centers, LED screens, floodlighting, hospitality lounges, and fan interaction areas will offer an unparalleled experience. Advanced crowd control systems, technology-driven ticketing, and accessibility features for guests with disabilities will all contribute to increased convenience and safety.
